Education Industry!

Hi, my name is Tonya Featherston, and like many of you, when I started my teaching career, I yearned to be the best in the profession and to truly change the lives of my students.

However, as the years passed, I gradually grew more and more disenchanted with my career. I loved what I was doing, but I was struggling financially to make ends meet.

If you’re a teacher, then you already know we don’t get paid enough to do our jobs. For most of us, teaching is a labor of love. We do it because we get enjoyment from watching the light bulbs go off over our students’ heads when they finally get what we are trying to teach them.

Most of us scramble for extra money by performing odd jobs or by taking on part-time seasonal summer employment. That’s old school.

Today I want to tell you about how you can leverage what you’ve already learned from your experience in the classroom, and turn it into a part-time or even a full-time business.

You Are the CEO of Your Classroom

Think about what we do as teachers in the classroom every single day:

  • We develop short-term and long-term plans

  • We make presentations and speak to small groups

  • We run meetings, assign tasks, and negotiate deals

  • We inspire, motivate and cheer people on

  • We analyze issues and help solve problems

  • We maintain metrics and measure performance

Each of these skills is similar to those of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a corporation. The only difference is that we’re typically in a classroom while they are in a boardroom. Sometimes we both deal with people who act like misbehaved children!

The bottom line is that your career as a teacher is the perfect preparation for you to become the CEO of your own company. You have been fully trained to take charge of your own company, and you probably didn’t even know it!

My Recipe for Success

I always loved teaching but hated being poor, so over the years I started researching and experimenting with various offline and online businesses. I tried just about every get-rich-quick scheme that crossed my path, but none of them were successful because they were missing one very key element … passion.

I learned you couldn’t be successful in business unless you are passionate about what you are doing, and for me, that was still teaching.

So in 2002, I decided to put together a program that exposed at-risk and inner city youth to hands-on science and technology through a summer camp. And not only did I love doing it because it was something I was passionate about, but I also made more money that summer than in any other business!

Passion counts.

If you are looking for a way to start your own business and to be successful in it, then you need to focus on what excites you and invigorates you.

The Edu-preneur’s Resource Guide
was written to help you determine what you’re passionate about and how to start pursuing teaching-related small business opportunities. Once you know what turns you on, it becomes much easier to focus and build wealth.

So What’s an Edu-preneur?

An edu-preneur is a current or former educator who spends their time, talent and resources developing a product, program or service to enhance learning for children or adults.

Edu-preneurs come in all shapes and sizes ranging from teachers who have become disenchanted with teaching to those who have created dynamic new teaching techniques.

Some edu-preneurs write books, some develop software tools or curriculum, some become speakers or subject matter experts, some create instructional videos, and some even open their own specialty schools.

No matter what an edu-preneur eventually creates, the common element that ties them all together is their burning passion to teach and help people learn.
